Texas State University: What is the Future of Democracy?

About this event

Note: This is a community event not affiliated with LWVHAYSCO.

Two leading international scholars in transformative learning and civic education, Dr. Chad Hoggan and Dr. Tetyana Hoggan-Kloubert, will lead an interactive lecture and a nonpartisan community discussion on the future of democracy. Drawing from their forthcoming book, "Learning for Democracy: A Framework for Adult Civic Learning," the authors will share key ideas from their new framework and invite the public into a timely conversation on democratic engagement and reflection. This event is presented by the Texas State University College of Fine Arts and Communication (with the support of Dean John Fleming) and the Graduate Student Organization of the Adult, Professional, and Community Education PhD Program (APCE).

About the speakers:

• Dr. Chad Hoggan is Professor of Adult & Lifelong Education at North Carolina State University, co-editor of the Journal of Transformative Education, and co-director of the Institute of Civic Studies and Learning for Democracy (ICSLD). He is co-chair of the 2026 International Transformative Learning Conference.
• Dr. Tetyana Hoggan-Kloubert is a scholar in Adult and Continuing Education at the University of Augsburg in Germany. She is an accomplished author and co-founder of the ICSLD, with research focusing on civic learning, ethics, and education for democracy.

The event will be held on Thursday, November 6th from 5:30-7:30 pm in Old Main 320 (3rd floor) at Texas State University in San Marcos; a reception will follow. This event is free and open to the public, and will offer an interactive lecture and non-partisan community discussion on democracy as an ongoing and participatory process.
