Leadership

As the League of Women Voters marked a century of civil rights advocacy for voting rights with non-partisanship. The trust built up, the alliances formed, and the span of the national, state, and local leagues allow the League to leverage its power to empower voters and protect democracy.

In every state in the nation…

League members are passionate activists supporting the multi-faceted work of the League in all 50 states and some 700 communities nationwide.

When you join the League, not only is it a great way to meet people and find new friends, but you also play an active role in our democracy.

Our volunteers work year-round to register new voters, host community forums and debates so voters learn about the qualifications and goals of candidates, and ensure that voters have the election information they need.  Local and state league volunteers engage on legislative priorities, particularly on efforts to improve our elections and protect our democracy. The national League advocates on national legislation, education, and ensures the voice of League members from every state informs members of Congress. Our organization with its national, state, and local components are essential to the process of empowering voters and defending democracy.

Joining the local League of Women Voters of Hays County automatically enrolls you as a member in our state and national League.

Hays County League

As the League moves into its second century, the LWV of Hays County (LWVHAYSCO) fully embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion in principle and in practice throughout our leadership and membership. Officers and directors alike reflect our beautifully multiracial and multi-ethnic county and country well.

Each May a new board president and slate of officers is elected. Well before then, a Nominating Committee does the work of considering and interviewing potential new board members and recommends a slate of officers. We also issue an open call for all those interested to nominate themselves or explore the possibility of serving if they would like to know more.

Texas LWV

The state League (the LWV of Texas or LWVTX) educates and supports the leadership of the 31 local leagues throughout Texas; ensures proposed legislation that would affect voting rights or access to the polls is analyzed and monitored at every phase; provides expert testimony to legislative committees; keeps members informed; provides tools to ensure member and nonmember input on legislative proposals is fast and easy; helps local leagues with training and grants for developing and maintaining a website for their community; ensures the League's nonpartisan and policies and protocols are followed.

U.S. League

The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) provides vision and leadership for the 700+ LWV clubs throughout the country. The national League focuses on the overall country, legislation both in Congress and in the states that impact voters and their rights. Through the network of state leagues, LWVUS is able to provide experts to provide testimony. They also monitor trends, and when states pass laws that negatively affect the ability for any group of voters to exercise their rights as citizens to vote, the League does not hesitate to take legal steps on their behalf.

Part of the work of the LWVUS is advocacy, so the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) was established to encourage the active and informed participation of citizens in government and to increase understanding of major public policy issues. Through the Educational Fund and grants made to state and local leagues, the Voters Guide publishes the results of nonpartisan educational efforts by Leagues to educate voters on their ballot, the positions of the candidates on those ballots, and where and when they can vote. Printed Voters Guides are distributed locally to libraries and other locales. In addition, VOTE411.org, the online version of the Voters Guide, provides a massive database of races, candidates, and propositions on ballots throughout the country. Voters enter their address and get access to the races and issues that will be on their own ballots based on their location. Volunteer League members throughout the country have collected information about each local candidate (in areas with a League), formulated nonpartisan questions for the Voters Guide and VOTE411, and submitted the results to the two guides.

Partnerships

The breadth of the League of Women Voters through its 700+ state and local organizations, along with the relationships of trust the LWV has formed over its 100-year existence as a nonpartisan organization that never favors nor opposes any party or candidate, has made possible a network of partnerships. Those alliances make it possible for the League to leverage its power on behalf of the rights of voters.

Partner organizations include many national, state, and local legal organizations that focus on voting rights. Groups that register voters, particularly in groups historically marginalized such as communities of color, are also often allies. With redistricting in focus in states and locales throughout the country, legal partners are able to help educate governmental representatives on the provisions of the Voting Rights Act and state voting laws.
