Who Are the Members?

We are an inclusive group that values and encourages membership that is diverse in its identities, ideas, and political persuasions. Membership in the League of Women Voters, the most respected and effective nonpartisan grassroots organization in the country, is open to all genders, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds. (Yes, in spite of the word "Women" in our name, many men are members too.)

Our members make a visible difference to create positive, lasting change in our communities. League members come from all backgrounds. Members are legislators, educators, civil servants, corporate employees, retirees, students, parents, activists…the list continues.

Why Should I Join?

As an active member you will:

• contribute a valuable service to the community;
• discover new interests, develop new skills, and learn about crucial issues in the community;
make professional contacts, build relationships, and develop lasting friendships as you meet others in the League who share a passion for good
• governance and action as a responsibility of citizenship;
•make a positive impact on our democracy.

How Much Time Does it Take?

It’s up to you! Many members choose to support the League only with their annual dues. Your membership alone gives us the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. We cover a broad spectrum of issues, interests, and concerns. You may choose to become active in as many as you like by participating in a study group, a committee, or listening to experts at a meeting, or even just by reading about them in one of our publications.

What Do League Members Do?

Members get information and alerts about issues to contact elected officials as they choose to participate.

At town team meetings, members who live in the same area of the county get to know one another, discuss issues common to their area, and work on collaborative solutions.

All members are encouraged to attend our three county-wide membership meetings (our Annual Meeting in May, Fall Social in September, and Winter Holiday Social) where a knowledgeable speaker provides us with information on issue of importance, we conduct organization business, and we take time to meet and enjoy each other’s company. We also hold fundraisers which provide a strengthened community and help raise critical funds to conduct our important work. Our main fundraising event is our annual Wine and Beer-Tasting Fundraiser and Silent Auction.

How Do League Members Support Issues and Advocacy?

Membership in the League of Women Voters of Hays County gives you an opportunity to be part of a NON-PARTISAN fellowship focused on the issues, on creating a more informed and engaged electorate, and creating a more transparent government.

We welcome everyone with every level of interest. Familiarize yourself with our positions or get in touch with us to arrange a chance to chat in person.

Recent LWVHAYSCO position groups studied the judiciary, environment, and policing and meet regularly to monitor legislation and suggest advocacy from our members in these areas.
