Know what you care about

Rent, energy bills, tuition, health care, water, food costs — make a short list of what hits your life hardest. Your priorities are the right starting point. No one else's.

Find out where candidates actually stand

Look up their answers on VOTE411.org. Read their websites. Watch a debate. Don't rely only on ads — those are designed to persuade, not inform.

Look at their record, not just their promises

What has the candidate actually done — in office, in their community, in their career? Past action is a far better predictor of future behavior than campaign slogans.

Consider who funds them

Campaign finance records are public. Who is giving large amounts to this candidate? Elected officials tend to be most responsive to the people who helped elect them.
